What is my GPA used for?

Your Texas State GPA (grade point average) is used to determine graduation eligibility, teacher certification elligibility, and more. The following instructions rely on information you provide and are solely a tool meant for personal use. Please contact an academic advisor for any official calculations.

What will I need to calculate my GPA?

You will need:

  • A copy of your transcript. You can find this online, using Catsweb Student Services. Click on "View Unofficial Transcript," under "Academic Records."
  • A calculator. Many computers come with a calculator. On windows, go to the Start Menu --> Run --> type in "calc".
  • A copy of your current/future schedule. You can find this online, using Catsweb Student Services. Click on  "Student Class Schedule," under "Enrollment and Registration."

How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?

  1. On your transcript, locate the "Grade Total" column. Scroll down to the end of your transcript. Find the number in the "Transcript Summary - TXST Totals" portion that corresponds to the "Grade Total" column. This is usually the third number from the left. Grade total is the number of points you have earned towards your GPA.
  2. On your transcript, locate the "GPA Hours" column. Scroll down to the end of your transcript. Find the number in the "Transcript Summary - TXST Totals" portion that corresponds to the "GPA Hours" column. This is usually the first number from the left. GPA hours are the number of hours (or credits) you have taken at Texas State. This includes F's.
  3. Use this formula: Grade total/GPA Hours=Cumulative GPA
  4. The GPA you calculated should be the same as the GPA on your transcript. Find the "Points AVG" column on your transcript. Find the number in the "Transcript Summary - TXST Totals" portion that corresponds to the "Points AVG" column. This is usually the fourth number from the left.

How do I calculate my semester/term GPA?

If you are interested in figuring out what your GPA will be at the end of this semester, you want to calculate your "Semester/Term GPA."

  1. Determine your "Grade total" and "GPA Hours" (the numbers listed on your transcript)
  2. Determine your "current hours," or the number of hours you are currently enrolled in using your current schedule.
  3. Estimate what grade you will receive in your courses. A=4pts/hr, B=3pts/hr, C=2pts/hr, D=1pt/hr, F=0pts/hr.
  4. Multiply the number of points you think you will receive by the credit hours of the course.
    • Ex) You think you will receive a "C" in BIO 2450. Multiply 2 points by 4 hours. You would receive 8 GPA points for this class.
  5. Use this formula (Current grade total + Grade total) / (Current GPA hours + GPA Hours) = Semester/Term GPA

What grades do I need to reach my target GPA?

If you are interested in figuring out what grades you need to achieve a certain GPA, you want to calculate your "Target GPA."

  1. Determine your "Grade total" and "GPA Hours" (the numbers listed on your transcript)
  2. Determine your "current hours," or the number of hours you are currently enrolled in using your current schedule.
  3. GPA hours + current (in progress) hours = Total GPA hours at the end of the semester
  4. Total GPA hours at the end of the semester x target GPA = Number of GPA points needed to receive your target GPA
  5. Number of GPA points needed - Grade total = Number of GPA points needed this semester
